Dowry means money or property given by a bride to her husband at the time of marriage, on condition. It is a social curse in our country. During marriage, some greedy people claim much wealth or money from the guardians of the brides. The poor and illiterate girls become the victims of this evil system. There are some reasons behind it. Greed for money is the main reason. The other reasons are illiteracy, poverty, the Hindu religion, unconsciousness, unemployment, etc.

This system affects the whole society. It disturbs social peace and happiness. Because of dowry, many married women commit suicide. Many are divorced by their husbands. Many women are tortured to death. This evil system must be uprooted at any cost. Our greedy nature should be changed. Girls should be properly educated and employed. Women should be made conscious of their rights and duties. Exemplary punishment should be given to the dowry takers. A social movement should be raised against dowry. Both the government and the conscious people should work together to uproot the evil system of dowry from our society.

The dowry system is a curse in our social life. This system is very harmful to society. The causes of the dowry system are mainly the Hindu religious tradition. Hindu women cannot inherit their paternal property. That’s why, cash, various ornaments, goods, dresses, etc., are given at their marriage ceremony. However, the first thing to be done to stop this malpractice is to raise awareness among all. The movement against the dowry system should start right now. We can get rid of this social vice by taking social reformative work urgently. With this end in view, we have to make people aware of the importance of education.

Education and self-reliance of women can help them get rid of the curse of dowry. An educated woman can develop her personality and thus command respect from her family and society. So first of all, we have to put emphasis on female education so that all girls can become educated, and at the same time, we must launch campaigns against this malpractice. Thus, we can get rid of the curse of this social malady.
