There lived a happy cobbler who passed his days working and singing from morning till night. A rich neighbor of his was a banker who one day said to him, “How much a year do you earn?”
The cobbler laughed and said, “I earn enough to make both ends meet.” The rich man said, “I think you are in great distress.” The cobbler said, “I am happy to lead such a life.”
The next day, the rich man again came and met the cobbler. He gave him fifty thousand taka and said, “Keep this money and remove your suffering.” The cobbler was surprised and did not take it at first. The rich man told him that he could use the money in times of need.
Taking the money, the cobbler thanked the man, but a new thought took hold of the cobbler. He did not find a safe place to keep the money. He dug a hole in his hut and kept it there, but he always thought that his money could be stolen at any time.
So he could not sleep at night and lost his peace of mind. Early in the morning, he took the money and returned it to the rich man. Thus, he could realise that money cannot bring happiness because happiness lies in contentment.

Once there lived a happy cobbler who passed his days working and singing from morning till night. A rich neighbor of his was a banker who one day said to him, “How much do you earn a year?”
The cobbler replied that he had never saved his one year’s income, and even he did not know how many days a year there were. Hearing this, the banker became surprised. He asked the cobbler what he did with his money.
The cobbler said that he lived from hand to mouth. The cobbler earned very little and spent all the money he earned in a day to support himself, and he had no ambition. He had no demand for amenities that he had not possessed. So poverty could not stand in the way of his happiness.
At this, a deep thought occurred in the mind of the banker. He sighed, “How helpless I am!” A vast property belonged to the banker. But an unsatisfaction always troubled him. So he always wanted more riches, which snatched away his happiness.
The banker said to himself, “What is the use of this possession when I’m deprived of real peace?” He thought he was poorer than the cobbler. So he began to find happiness by giving away all his riches to the poor. Happiness is a relative factor that varies from person to person. It can’t be possessed in spite of having vast properties.

The cobbler replied, “I earn enough to make both ends meet.” “I am sorry for that. You must be living in great distress,” said the banker. “But I am used to this sort of life and I am happy,” said the cobbler.
The next day, the rich banker again came to visit the cobbler. He came with ten thousand taka in a bag. He said to him, “Look, my friend! I’ve brought ten thousand taka for you. Keep this money and remove your distress.” The cobbler was greatly surprised.
