Introduction: The fair, usually held in rural areas, is known as a village fair. It is an annual affair. It is held for a day or a few days on the occasion of local festivals. It is a large gathering of village people.

Time, place, and occasion: Before the certain date of the beginning of the fair, preparations go on for a few days. People eagerly wait for that special day. Children save money throughout the year and eagerly wait for the day to buy toys and fancy goods. A village fair is generally held on the bank of the river or at the marketplace, or in the yard of a temple, dargah, dighi, or mazars of saints. The occasion of the village fair can be the death anniversary of some saints, some religious festivals, or the beginning of New Year’s Day.

Description: A village fair is a kind of exhibition. People of all ages from the nearby villages gather at a village fair. Men, women, children, and all flock together in each village fair. The young and the old, the rich and the poor, the high and the low, the elite and the rustic, the saint and the scoundrel, all gather together in a village fair.

Things available: Local potters, weavers, carpenters, and so on bring their articles and display them very beautifully. There is a great assemblage of fancy goods like toys, whistles, bombs, hair-pins, cheap ornaments, common cosmetics, looking glasses, plates, etc. There are a good number of shops of sweetmeats. Sweetmeats are the common purchase of the visitors. Most attractively painted earthen pots, baskets made of bamboo and cane, and small and beautiful furniture are also available at the fair. Cloth stores are also seen somewhere. Seasonal fruits like mango, jackfruit, and lichis are also available. Some special arrangements like circus, jatra, magic show, nagordola, doll dance, gambling, and lotteries are made in a village fair to attract and amuse the simple villagers.

Usefulness/ Merits/ Importance: A village fair is of great use to the villagers. It encourages cottage industries, artisans, craftmen, porters, weavers, and cultivators. They sell their crops and goods here. It is also the meeting place of the villagers.

Demerits: A village fair has some demerits too. There is no sanitation system here. In a village fair, people of all classes gather. Gambling parties, Pick-pockets, and toll-collectors also gather together. The authorities concerned should be careful to stop these.

A village fair plays a very significant role in the rural economy. It is generally held every year at a fixed time. It is an occasional event. Many people gather in a village fair to buy and sell things. Moreover, it is a great source of recreation for them.

Time and Place:
A fair is usually held in an open space where communication is easy. People from many places come to the fair to buy as well as to sell. Usually it is held on occasions like the Bengali New Year’s Day, the 21st February, and the Eid-day.

Description:
A village fair is a gay affair. I have been to such a fair several times in my life. The fair I visited last was held in the Public Library premises in Rangpur town. On the occasion of Pahela Boishakh, I visited the fair. I was accompanied by two of my bosom friends. There were different types of stalls in different rows, such as: book stalls, stalls for dolls and toys, electronic goods, hand-made goods, etc. All stalls were almost crowded. We wandered around the fair and enjoyed it very much. My friends and I rode on a merry-go-round. I bought some toys for my younger sister.

Usefulness:
A village fair is a place of fun and enjoyment for the people living around. It dispels the monotony of the village people. All categories of people – poor and rich, children and adults, men and women, illiterate and educated come crowding in the fair and enjoy the best of it according to their limit of interest. The most delighted are the children. They buy cheap flutes, toys, sweets, and fancy goods, ride the merry-go-round, and feel terribly happy and excited.
