Introduction :
It is the age of science. Science is the driving force of modern civilization. By the blessings of science, we can talk over the phone or the internet and send messages across the seas. Due to science, man has landed on the moon and Mars. He has invented a computer. It is the latest miracle of science and technology.

How invented:
Charles Babez, a British professor of Mathematics, first thought about a formula. The formula was supposed to help the human brain. He could not invent the computer. He initiated the research leading to the invention of the computer. But the credit for the invention of the modern computer goes to an American scientist. He is Mr Howard Akin. In 1933, he invented a machine that could do difficult sums. After seven years, the electric computer was used at Harvard in 1944.

Functions of a Computer:
Generally, a computer performs three functions. It receives data. It processes data through various computations. And it emits data.

Major components of a computer :
A computer consists of five major components. They are the input unit, the output unit, the memory unit, the control unit, and the arithmetic unit.

Machine language :
Every computer has its own machine language. It understands only this language. So, instructions to the computer must be given in this language.

Its uses :
Computer serves us in many ways. It is used in translation. It translates poems or any part of literature. It is used in big agricultural farms in America. Trains and planes are run by computers. The results of the examination can be accurately given by a computer within a short time. The time is not far off when all brainwork will be done by computers.

Computer in Bangladesh :
Today, computers are very popular in Bangladesh. It has already occupied an important place in the minds of the people. The young generation is very conscious of computer education. They are receiving training in computing with great interest.

The computer is one of the wonders of modern science. It is a fairly recent invention. It has now become an essential part of modern life. It has made our way of life easy and comfortable. We cannot do anything today without a computer.

A computer is basically a processor of information. Any device that helps people perform mathematical calculations may be called a computer. In 1933, Howard Akin, an American scientist, invented such a machine that could do difficult sums, and it was called the computer. Today’s computer is a special kind of electronic machine that can perform mathematical calculations and process large masses of information at a great speed.

A computer performs three functions. Firstly, it receives data. Secondly, it processes data. Thirdly, it provides output. Every computer has a machine language of its own, and accordingly, it works. Nowadays, a computer means a digital computer. It can do hundreds of things more than an analogue computer.

Digital computers are of four types: microcomputers, minicomputers, mainframe computers, and supercomputers. Computers are made in different forms, too. It is not only a monitor and a CPU. Embedded systems, such as those in washing machines or air-conditioners, are also computers designed to do a single specific task rapidly.

Computers are widely used in banks, insurance companies, and educational institutions for data storage, processing, and output etc. Computers are also used for telecommunications, air traffic control, navigation of ships and aircraft, etc. In the field of medicine, diagnosis and printing computers are doing wonders. A new developing section of computer technology is ‘robotics’. Robots are being made to help humans in their tasks, especially the dangerous and hard ones.

Computers have made our lives easier and enjoyable. It has brought for mankind such comforts as a man can never dream of, even in a fairy land. It is the latest miracle that has brought about revolutionary change in man’s life and in the application of science for the benefit of mankind.
